The 2000rpm range and the valve cover comment from mech. makes
me think it could be the infamous distributor rattle. Some have
fixed this with thin washers, others have had to replace the
distributor. For details, check out:

Agreed. My left leg gets a good workout. My first push in an
unfamiliar car usually feels like I've put a hole in the floor!

Also, maybe master or slave cyl. going bad? (sorry, no write-up
on those.)
