RE: 225/50-15 on 4kq
First of all,
I dont see what all the hype is about the size being to BIG a tire
"Assuming you could fit it" Which BTW, you can I THINK> I think Alex
Neckus is running a similar size BUT you need to bump down the aspect
ratio to like a 40 series, better yet use a 16 inch rim. I KNOW a
215/40-16 will fit but a 225/50-15 I doubt it. Wide and Tall. Bad combo.
BUt, back to the hype, the 4kq weighs about 2,800 lbs give or take
a few. That is fairly heavy car compared to many. Hell, Cars of that
weight Ferrari F40, Porsche 911 Turbo, etc all run MUCH bigger tires and
they dont Hydroplane off the road all the time. Granted they are designed
for that much tire but the physics is the same. It can be done. I would
start to worry about wheel bearing wear though if you go to big, esp if
they stick out the side at all which would mean bigger fenders though. I
would guess the UR-Q with the 8x15's has much bigger bearing than a 4kq.
Second, from my offroading years, Tractors (ANd Landrovers too)
have skinny tall tires to get Through the mud to contact the firm ground
underneath. The big tread blocks are to clear the mud away and Get Rid of
It by throwing it into the air thus cleaning the tread to make room for
more mud. The other theory of thought, Used if the Mud is REALLY DEEP is
to use huge 44 inch by like 16 in wide High Floatation tires to keep you
on top of the mud and to use locking diffs and the tread on tires to
propel you over/through it. Kind of like a paddle wheel. These tires
also have Huge tread blocks to grab mud but keep the car afloat on the mud
due to HUGE contact patch. Usually are aired down to like 10 psi too, or
lower. The BFG Mud Terrains have very stiff sidewalls and on a Jeep
Wrangler or Cherokee are happy at 6-7 PSI for rock crawling.
Just some data I have gathered in my cobweb of a mind to throw out
at everyone. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, or rather,
I Hope everyone Had a Wonderful Turkey Day. L8R
