With the greatest respect to yourself, and with a lot less to Audi, the
parts microfiche is bollocks - at least with regard to the MB
implementation.
This is just an example - but I have no doubt that the same might well
be true for 1989 MC engines ...
The microfiche says:
035 109 119 -> 85-D-902 500 113Z
034 109 119 85-E-900 001 -> 85-J-900 643 120Z
074 109 119 85-J-900 644 -> 142Z
074 109 119 -Super Torque- Allum Engine
('Z', BTW, is probably the German word "Zahn" - tooth.)
85-J-900643 is actually registered with the UK club, and is an 'anomally'
car (there are lots) in that the engine number (MB001138) is some two
hundred lower than you'd expect. 85-J-900642 has engine MB001377.
The real problems occur at chassis 85-J-900746 (+/- 2). At that point,
the engine suddenly regresses (746 has MB001515, 748 has 1373) and it
looks like Audi used up a batch of around 50 back-level engines.
The problem arises because the parts microfiche _STUPIDLY_ keys the
belt part number from a chassis breakpoint, not an engine breakpoint.
Where back-level engines were fitted (in mid-1989 for the MB ur-quattro,
and very probably during the same time frame for the MC engine) this
system _INEVITABLY_ results in the wrong timing belt, water pump and
harmonic balancer part numbers being 'picked' for a number of 1989 cars.
Audi know about this, and have done nothing.
