New A4 and A8: for spotters only

Hi all,

Both the Dutch AutoWeek and Gute Fahrt magazine from Germany feature the
new A4 and A8. Fears that Audi would choose for rounded A6-like rear ends
are unfounded- apparently conservativism is what Audi chose for when when
time came to update their successful models. Yes, the A8 is succesful- it's
outselling the S-Class Mercedes-Benz by a considerable margin here in
Holland (our high new-car taxes make it a car for the extremely well-off
only).

Both cars have received only a minor exterior update, with clear glass in
the headlights and new bumpers with neatly integrated projector foglights
at the front. Even Audi fans have to look twice to spot the differences.
Both cars also feature some interior updates, the A8's 3.7 and 4.2 V8s now
have five valves per cylinder and its suspension features more alu bits,
reducing unsprung weight by some 40 lbs.

If you were thinking about buying one of the old models for fear of radical
and unsightly updates- just wait for the new cars. You're guaranteed to
like 'em. The only things you might not like are the price hikes for both
cars...

Other Audi news:
The TT FWD battled it out with BMW's Z3 Coupe 2.8 in the Dutch AutoWeek a
couple of weeks ago- and won, due to its nicer engine (albeit with two less
cylinders!), better interior, and better overall balance. Oh, and not
forgetting its substantially lower price.

Top Gear Magazine features a large hot-hatchback test this month, in which
the new Golf GTI and Audi A3 1.8T are pitted against some tough
competition, and win convincingly. The Audi, although providing a very
muted driving experience, made it to second place because of its great
chassis and excellent build quality and interior, making it appear as
though you're driving a bigger car. The Golf rated first for its lower
price and almost-as-good driving experience. Even the considerably cheaper
Peugeot 306 GTI with its brilliant chassis and six-speed gearbox and the
cheap and powerful five-cylinder Fiat Bravo HGT had to yield to the VAG
products. The rough-and-ready Seat Cupra 16v didn't really make it to the
top, BTW.
