Swapping Diesel into 5K
I had two 1980 5k diesels. The engines required a rebuild after 120K
miles. The major problem was the block, it's cylinder wore out very
fast
because of block/pistons (bad design). They did not have cylinder
liners like most diesels so you had to bore the block and add new
pistons. I changed the oil and filters (very important) including air
every 2500 to 3k miles. The cylinder heads were not made heavy duty for
diesel use. They warped very easy. They also had a tendency to crack
between the exhaust and intake valves. Alot of the time the cracks would
go into the water passages (Very Bad Bad) I would assume Audi remedied
these problems. I would check to see if Audi redesigned the engined and
how long the TDI engines last before a rebuild.
