5K Interior Door Latch Dead

The driver's side interior latch just stopped working.  It moves, door
doesn't open, or even click...  Fortunately the outside latch still
works and so does the window... but eventually the weather is bound to
get in the way...

So I was wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions about what to
try first.  Latch rod disconnected? dead latch?  

Any BTDT out there to suggest some things to look at first.
