	My 88 Jetta has the same problem.  I took the car to discount tire and found
out that two of my four wheels are bent.  This doesn't cause a harsh vibration
because the counter balancing of when the tires were installed but causes a
light hum and a vibration on heavy acceleration.  Don't know if this is your
problem but I just thought it might help to let you know.
