annoying and possibly dangerous headlamp behaviour...

Hi!

Who has had problems with their headlamps in their 1989-1991
Audi 200 suddenly turning off while driving? This has
been happening since last week. I'm driving along and all of
a sudden the headlamps will switch off completely. Turning
on brights turns them all on, the fog lamps work. I noticed
when parking on Saturday night at a club that the lamsp will
even switch on and off several times very quickly. Last night
coming home they just simply went out, scared me and
possibly some oncoming traffic. Could this just be a problem
with the steering column switch? Neat trick: turn on the
headlamps, grab hold of the indicator/brights stalk and move
it up to the point just before the indicators come on and
then push it forward to turn on the brights. Look, Ma, no
lights! I hope it is just the switches, I don't want to have
the next owner come up to me and demand I fix it as I am
planning to sell the car in the next few months.

Ack! Problem car, this one is! Can't wait to get my new
200!

G.
