Don't believe it.  The Audi 5sp automatic tranny is killer, though none of my
fellow list member will believe me before having a ride.  Mine is a 1997
non-tiptronic, so I have a few complaints about its decisions to shift at certain
times, but tiptronic fixes all that.  Last person rode had a 1.8TQ manual and an
MTM chip, he was surprised to find that my automatic was faster than his car.  I
have seen tuners take their tiptronic cars all the way to stage 3!  For your
nephew, where longevitiy is a concern, if he satys below 225hp he should be all
right, i.e. a stage 2 upgrade is about the max.
