Ur-Q gas mileage?

Hello to all,

I'm new to the list and have some questions concerning mileage for a 84'
Ur-Q.

Let me give you a little history first. I purchased this car in Nov.
of 97'. The car is in vgc. with only 93K mi, no rust and near perfect
paint & interior. It is mainly stock and the only upgrade I know of is a
regound performance cam that was installed when a cracked exhaust
manifold was replaced at about 65K mi (this was done by the original
owner of the car, who I cannot seem to locate). This cam is marked "CAM
295" with a hand metal etcher and there are no other markings I can
find.

Anyway, at that time the car averaged about 16-17 mpg in the city and at
best near 23 mpg on a long trip (4000mi) driving at 75-85mph.

This spring the timing belt snapped (on the track). I was lucky and
there was no internal engine damage. Once home I tore apart the front of
the car and and installed a new belt/water pump/idler. The cam is now
set at factory settings and I have double checked that it is correct.
Unfortunately, I do not know how the cam was timed in before the belt
failure.

Now, the car now has a more noticable lumpy idle and the mileage has
dropped to about 13-14 city and 18-19 hwy. Power is still good --maybe
better than it was before I replaced the timing belt. It will now rev
easily to 6000rpm (full boost) where as before it strained to reach
5500rpm. The spark plugs look clean and everyting else appears to be
functioning normally.

Is this kind mileage out of line for an UR-Q? Does anyone think this car
could benefit with advancing the timing gear one tooth? Also does anyone
know what kind of cam I have?

I need some good ideas on how to boost the mileage before Dec. 19th as
I'm leaving for my annual 4000+ round trip winter trek to the midwest.

Regards,

Frank Haas
