3B owners -- check your hoses!
I've been chasing an elusive low-boost and stalling problem (replaced
the bypass valve with no effect) and I finally found the problem by
working through Scott Mockry's check list. (Thank you, Scott!)
Luckily, I hit paydirt on item 2 (I was still being pretty
conscientious) .. the hose from the turbo bypass valve to the intake
manifold was rotten through. I would never have found it had Scott not
specifically recommended taking the heat shield off (actually, just the
top bolts suffice) : the hose looked practically new everywhere else!
You'd think I'd have checked this first: a very similarly placed vacuum
hose rotted through on my (now dead) 5KT, and caused *exactly* the same
symptoms for more than a year before I found the problem.
Of course, I still haven't replaced the hose, so I shouldn't get too
cocky -- but I feel pretty confident. 1.8 bar, here I come!
My car has a measly 85K miles on it, and I think this failure mode just
smacks of poor design. The heat shield is obviously inadequate, or the
hose material is.
It's an easy thing to check, so I recommend that all of you do so.
