Re: Which Quattro to buy?
Brian,
I concur with Dave. Older Audis, especially the type 44's because
of the hydraulic system components, can be frightfully expensive to
maintain. Even if you do all your own work, the cost of parts is very
high. I understand the Urq's are even more pricy because of the rarity
of certain parts, etc.
I love having my 200q, it's a blast to drive. My Mom's A6q is
great too. However, maintainence/repair is akin to opening your wallet
and shaking it out over a big dark bottomless pit. Whenever you make the
decision to fix an older car, you must do so with the knowledge that you
will not recover the money on resale (unless you are really lucky).
Audi's are especially so.. (don't get me started).
However, the cost of ownership is still less than the monthly payment
on all but the lowest priced econoboxes, so there is some comfort there.
I'm a student, and I have struggled to keep my Audi running at times.
Here is the other thing, be very careful buying one. Audis mask their
age better than any other car I've driven. A few ppl on this list have
had bad experiences buying Audis that have had their odometers rolled.
DO the usual pre-purchase inspection, preferably on a lift by a trusted
mechanic and make sure you know model specific problem areas to inspect.
The Q-list can help you in that regard.
Good luck.
