1988 90q front turn signal assembly question

Sometiime Saturday night my driver's side front turn signal assembly fell
off the car. I got a new one today and installed it, and tied it in with
floral twist tie wire for safety. Good thing. It was loose when I got to
work. There doesn't seem to be any good grabbing going on between it and
the fender and the headlight. On the fender side are two springy plastic
parts; on the headlight side are essentially four locatiing prongs, two of
which have bumps on the end that are tapered in a way that they don't lock
in place. (As distinguished from, say, the way the right headlamp rear
shroud that locates the air duct locks in place.) Am I possibly missing
some metal retainers that fit in the headlight assembly and hold the turn
signal assembly prongs more firmly?
