This strikes me as being almost the optimal use of ABS.  The strongest
braking force you will get will be what you get *just before* wheel lock
up.  That "chirp" is the very first indication of wheel lock up and results
in the ABS computer actuating causing rapid pumping of the brakes.  I think
I'd be happy with what is reported.

I suspect that the two older cars are probably engaging ABS slightly
earlier than at lock up.  The question is, "which way gives better panic
stops?"  I'm not sure of the answer.  I'd wager that the Audi engineers
are.  :-)
