Re: Howling 4kq Transmission/Driveshaft?
Matthew;
Check out your driveshaft centre bearing, front CV joint, and u-joint.
Have you been greasing the u-joint? Hopefully it is a bad centre bearing,
and not a tranny problem.

Subject: Howling 4kq Transmission/Driveshaft?
I though I was finally done excising all the evil bugs from my new 87
4kq. I finally got the temp gauge to work properly, thanks to a $10
sender from my local auto yard. I next time I drove the car, however,
something in the transmission started to make an awful noise. It is a
LOUD whistling, flute-like, siren-like noise that emanates from the
driveshaft tunnel. Its epicenter seems to be approximately 8 aft
(towards the back seat) of the shifter. It make its bad noises
regardless of the gear or if the clutch is disengaged. It howls from 3
30 mph, then quits, only to come back abruptly while slowing to 30.
It did this a few weeks ago for a day and a half, then quit. Now it is
back. There are two variables that may have enticed its return: (1)
while I was putting in the sender, it was parked at a severe angle into
my driveway. I left it there for about 3 hours; (2) it is very cold
here today (0f), but, it did not make the noise this morning when I went
to the wrecking yard.
I had a case of Redline in the trunk, so I changed the tranny oil to see
if that would help (boy was the old stuff gooey and there was no where
near 2 quarts of it). The change made no difference. Although I have
my fingers crossed that it will fix itself again, I will probably not be
that lucky.
