Internal/Car Salon Vent repair on V8Q 1990

Hello Folks,

My internal/Car Salon Vent stopped working.  It happened after a responsible
fuse burned twice -- (this is the fuse in the V8Q Audi, probably others,
that is responsible for multiple devices, like radio, vent, computer
display, internal light, etc.)   It probably burned due to malfanction in
the Vent.

The ever ready Audi mechanic from M&M Audi in Bay Area, ( I think they make
frequent secret thanksgivings pilgrimages to Germany) quoted me about an
hour's time to diagnose and if it is a bad vent, 3.5 hrs for labor.  He also
didn't have a quote for the actual  part for V8, but says that $260 is the
cost for this part for Audi 5000 ?!   I think am looking at $600 for this
job but prefer to do it myself.

Questions:
1) What could be wrong besides the actual vent motor?

2) Anyone had this problem before and how easy is it to get to it in a V8Q
1990?  Got to go through the dashboard?  

3) Any recommendation as to where I can get the part for cheaper?  I didn't
have a good experience with Blau., they send me the wrong part and didn't
want to face up to it.
