Themostat Replacememnt on 4ksq

Ok, so I went and purchased a $33 thermostat from a dealer and it has an
arrow stamped in the metal on the outside edge, pointing outward.  I was
told that this should be pointing straight up- the thin bar/strip would then
be parallel to the block.  Is this correct?  I thought the one I pulled out-
same vw/Audi part had the arrow pointing toward the passenger cabin.  I just
don't want to screw this up again.  Any help would be very much appreciated.
