I have the exact same problem...my mechanics have been less than helpful diagnosing it.
First they thought a tune-up and a new air filter would fix it...now they claim that my bad
catalytic converter might be to blame (it's getting replaced next week so I can pass inspection)...
but I think that's a shot in the dark.  I'd love to hear anyone's suggestions as well.
