He should still call his insurance agent. If he has coverage on another
vehicle, it is possible that he is also covered on the new purchase. I've
been through this (not the wreck part!!) when buying new cars. My agent
(State Farm) says coverage is "automatic" when a car is purchased. There
is some time limit that you must go pay up though.

YMMV, things may be different on that side of the continent, but it is
worth the phone call.

Matt, you are certainly correct on this issue-at least under Colorado's
insurance law. I too just found this out today. To make a long story
short, this is how I found out: 1) purchase vehicle on a saturday night
from private owner. 2) Drive vehicle home with a plate from another
quattro-JUST TO GET IT HOME! 3) Get pulled over for not having a front
plate. 4)End up receiving 3!!! tickets that night.

Since it was a late Saturday purchase, I couldn't notify my insurance
agent nor did I have the means of getting a temp tag-therefore my
decision to just use my plate to get it home. Murphy's Law ensued.
Cop was just pulling me over for not having a front plate(mandatory
2 plate law in CO) Oh yeah, I'm making this short. Tickets were for
1) No vehicle registration-mandatory court appearance
2) No vehicle insurance-mandatory court appearance and 4 points
3) Displayed fictitious tags on a vehicle-mandatory court appearance.
He then tells me to show up in court and as long as I have all the
required legal paperwork-current insurance and current registration,
that all charges will be dropped. That's when I find out that indeed this
car was covered under my insurance for 30days after purchase. There's
alot more to the story but thats the short version. Hope this helps
someone. Looking forward to court-two days before Steamboat!!
