front door speakers

I have an 89 200 without any speakers in the front door.  Crutchfield
installation guide says that maximum depth of speaker hole is 2 inches.
Probaly can build up somewhat on the outside of the door panel and go with
some more than 2 inches but hate loosing the litte door storage tray at
the front of the door.  Has anyone installed new front door speakers and
what suggestions do you have, including type of speakers.  Pioneer
supposedly has a 1 7/8 inch 6 1/2 inch wide speaker but may be too big for
the existing hole.  Does enlarging the hole pose any special problems?  Is
there a good 5 inch speaker that can save that added labor?  Help
