FWIW, when I brought my '98 A4 1.8 in for its first oil change, I had a
case of Mobil1 0w30 in the trunk.  The service manager told me not to
use it, as it's too thin (even for winter use).

Apparently they've had problems with intermittent low oil pressure alarms
using 5w30, and of course 0w30 would give the same problem, only more so.

I'm running 10w30 at his recommendation and it seems to be fine.
