Was thinking about this dilemma this evening and figured 
it out!

Took apart my junky, spare steering wheel and pulled off
the back piece that meets the column, put it on the urq 
"style" wheel (it was from an 81 build date coupe, not 82)
and got the whole unit in the car...  It works!  No gap!
Also, the lights are working correctly, it was a ground 
problem, some sanding did the trick!   Thanks to all!
