Gearbox/transfer-case oil

Peter,
I wanted to let you know that according to my just arrived Bentley
manual(for my 91 200), that although the later cars have the same gearbox /
transfer case arrangement as the older ones, the later models have the fill
plug located 17mm higher on the side of the gearbox. They therefore hold
another quart of oil (3.2 vs 2.2). My early Bentley (for my 87 5000) didn't
contain this, and after changing oil several times in that car, I knew it
was a little more than 2 quarts. I will be putting the good stuff (Redline)
in my 91 as well.

The manual claims the box is full when the oil is 7 mm Below the low point
of the fill hole. (!) Just try to get some calipers in there...(!) What
genious devised that??? Then it goes on to state that filling it up till it
runs out the hole is OK ... Seriously it really does say that. I'm just
going to measure out 3.2 quarts and put it in. Don't forget to drain the
transfer case as well, (its right in front of the driveshaft). BTW, you'll
need a monster of an allen key to get the plug(s) out, and if the fill plug
is even higher then on the older cars it will be even more of a mess !
