Cut mine back nine inches and spliced a length in just a couple of
months ago.

I've now seen several cars with this wire _disconnected_.  On the MB
ur-quattro, and probably on the WR/WX, it leaves the alternator and
goes up into the engine bay.  Two or three feet along, there's a
single-pole connector.  Unscrupulous dealers unplug this connector to
stop the alternator warning light flashing during the sucker's test
drive.
