Thanks for the responses.
Fearing the worst, this morning I checked the diff fluid - level and
condition was fine; no infiltration of tranny fluid or sign of leaks.
So took it out to try to further diagnose the noise. Pulled into the
local parts shop - for yet another multifunc. temp switch - and left car
running.  Came out, drove off - no speedo, no noise.  Instrument blubs
and flaky autocheck were on the fix-it list anyway.  Amazing how these
cars make you rejoice at the prospect of a $$ DIY job vs. $$$$ ". . .
these parts are dealer only/hard to find Mr. Murphy" shop job.
