Ack! The Audi gods have struck again. '88 80 Thermostat

Curse the audi engineers. Looks like the thrmostat is stuck open on my 1988
80. And apparently to change it I have to drain the coolant system, remove
the PB pump and bracket to get to the thermostat. Does anyone know, is
there a better, or easier way of doing this? I have a brand new thermostat
and seal just waiting to go in. Next question would the 180 degree
thermostat be better than the 160 degree. The local parts store (Autozone)
recomended the 160. And I assume I will need a gasket sealant when I put
this back together, any recomendations? I have only had this car about 8
months, and still am not all that knowledgable about it, still used to
working on my 75 oramac I drove for 8 years. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated. And yes I do own a Bentley Bible. That is how I have come to
figure out the pain it will be to replace the thermostat. Thanks in
advance.
