Afterrun Radiator Fan on 5ktq

Hi,
My 87 5000cs Turbo Quattro would not start this morning. Although it has a
month old battery, it was -16 degF and the afterrun feature of the radiator
appears to be wearing down the battery. The effect of the afterrun system may
be more pronounced due to my lack of the electric water pump. Can anyone help
by telling me if there is a simple method to temporarily disable the afterrun
feature of the radiator fan?
