For the slotted nut, I usually compress the spring until the nut goes
on completely.  Then I use a flat-end punch and a hammer to hit the
slotted nut a few times.  Done right, it works.  Done wrong, the slotted
nut can back off when tightening the top nut.

As for the top nut, I don't have experience with Konis, but the Boge
Turbo Gas rear struts on my Coupe GT have the "flat-spotted" extension
on the end of the strut shaft.  I used vice grips for a while, until
I found a Lisle socket at Pep Boys labelled "GM strut tool" (or
something to that effect).  It is a 3/8" drive socket made to fit
down onto the end of the strut shaft (around the flat spots), and
it works perfectly.  It only costs a few dollars, and was well worth
the money.
