Thanks... as I've been unable to get any hose end off its stub,
I finally decided to cut the hose close to the input end of the check
valve - without trying the washer first, sadly - in order to see
how far the pump pumps...
As was starting to do so - by just piercing the hose a little
with de-insulating pliers, I saw some bubbles move in teh previously
empty hose. And of course it works now, but for the losses
through those piercings, and one clogged nozzle.

So I don't know what the problem was, and I now have this little
leak to fix. Hmmm. I guess this won't be a BTDT as such.
