Removing Undercoating before Rolling Fenders

Thanks to JG who suggested that I use a heat gun to remove the
undercoating on the rear fender lips of my UrQ. As some may know, it
appears that prior to rolling fenders on the early UrQs one must first
remove the undercoating. Failure to remove the undercoating may result
in body wrinkles.

I bought a $25 Wagner heat gun from Sears and used a couple of plastic
putty knives. This doesn't harm the primer and easily removes the
undercoating, which can be quite thick in places. After cleaning up the
remaining residue with laquer thinner I applied a thin coat of a special
underbody paint. This paint is similar to the paint sold by Imparts that
sticks to anything and seals everything. It remains flexible, which will
be important when I roll the lip. I'm having the work done by Rapid
Parts in New York. They have a bolt on tool with plastic roller to do he
job. This could be a disaster but I have taken every reasonable step to
prevent it, so here goes. Wish me luck.
