I don't think the 2.8 V6 "normally" consumes oil -- regardless of the
engine oil type. I've owned two such engines, the current one is in my
'93 90CS. I've driven at least 30K on each of my 2.8 V6's, using
regular oil and synthetic oil, and neither has consumed oil at a rate of
1 quart every 1000 miles. Sounds suspicious to me...
Due to my recent experiences at one local Audi service department, I'd
get a second opinion. Forget the "Audi Factory Trained/Certified
Technicians" and find yourself an Audi qualified/experienced mechanic.
