Yep. It was badged as a VW, but was an Audi-engineered and built vehicle.

The Paris-Dakar car may have been 5 cylinder, I don't know for sure;
but the normal production Iltis had the 4-cylinder engine (the same
basic one used in many other VWs and Audis), and I don't think it was
turbocharged.

Audi engineers built a proof-of-concept test mule using a modified Audi 80
(for U.S. readers, this was the Audi Fox in the late 70s) chassis and put
some modified hacked up componentry (Iltis and other Audi parts bin stuff,
as well as some one-offs pieces). This was used to demonstrate the
effectiveness of the concept to VW/Audi senior management. The car had
160hp yet it outperformed a 240hp Porsche 928 on a test course, and got
the engineers the approval to proceed with the quattro project. That car
would arguably be the first "ur" quattro :).
