MB engine problems - backfiring

I visited the Area E meeting this evening, and John Robinson's car is
exhibiting some _real_ _weird_ symptoms. On top of all his other
niggles, it is backfiring and also firing in the exhaust at engine
speeds between 4500 and 5000 rpm. If a single backfire sounds a
little like a gunshot, this sounds like a poorly oiled machine gun.

When we stopped back at the pub and pulled the bonnet catch, the area
between the inlet manifold and cam cover was full of smoke. The car
also stank of fuel.

It was dark and wet, so I've suggested he brings the car down to
Roger's at the weekend.

The engine is a late MB - the external system pressure regulator of the
MC-2 with the single knock sensor of the MC-1. ECU is MAC12D - _very_
close relative of the MAC11.
