Radiator fan: resistor replaced, not solution...
Hi!
I got another resistor for the rad fan on my 200t,
it came from a '88 5k that was stripping and had
no fan or overheating problems. Many months back
my fan started to do the intermittent thing,
clicking from under the dashboard and then later
it just stopped working at normal speeds. I have
to run the AC on LO in order to make the fan run
all the time to keep the temps at 87 celcius.
The very high speed works if the temp gets to
about 100, but normally there is a lower fan
speed that I understand should come on in order
to keep the temps to around 87-90. This doesn't
work anymore. Replacing the resistor on sunday
morning didn't make a difference either. With
the AC off the fan remains off until the temps
reach about 100 and then the tornado speed kicks
in at the fan.
I also reconnected the temp sensor for the aircon
at the front of the car. I turned on the motor and
switched on the AC and the fan came on. I later
drove to the beach and noticed that even with the
AC on the temps went up to 100. When I left the beach
I undid the temp sensor and drove off. The temps
reached 100 again, but on a long downhill it came
back to 87. At home I noticed the fan was running again
with the AC on.
Could the fact that the low speed of the fan not coming
on be related to something else apart from the fan
resistor? I guess I should replace the thermo switch
on the radiator, right? This car never used to run
hot until that intermittent problem started happening
almost a year ago. List input pointed out a possible
demise of the resistor, which I've only managed to
find a replacement for last week.
Ack! Is this a nightmare car or what? :)
Oh yes, anyone know what the inner diameter of the hose
is that runs from the underside of the coolant
overflow tank to the inlet of the radiator against
the left fender? This one seems to have formed a leak
last week and I cannot afford to pull the car off
the road for a day or more. Will any flexible radiator
hose do or should I aim for a hose with 2 right-angle
bends?
Thanks.
G.
