I cleaned up the ports just enough to match the gaskets, and to clean off 
the roughness from the casting process.

Probably.

Yes, they are cheap.  I got them at the dealer.  When I did the head, I
bought all the parts from either the dealer, or my buddy who is an engine
builder.  For most parts, they were about the same price, but a couple
parts were significantly cheaper at one place or the other.  You need to
price the parts yourself.
