I remembered something else this might be - differential exhaust
cooling.
At one time, it used to happen to mine. You need cold rain or slush
on the road - the way the airflow under the car works leads to one side
of the centre exhaust section being cooled more than the other, and the
exhaust twists into the prop shaft. If you let it cool down, the
problem goes away. Symptom is a bright spot on top of the exhaust
pipe - fix is to re-align the exhaust.
