Ur-q questions...LONG
Over the past six months I have been seriously toying with the idea of
purchasing a Ur-q. I have had my eye on one that is privately owned, has a
mint body and the interior seems quite good...admittedly I haven't seen it
too close. The car does, however, have one problem (well, so far!)...it
currently is lacking in the power department -> it has no engine!
I've only been able to talk to the owner's parents, as he stores it at
thier house. However, I've got some pretty basic (perhaps stupid even)
questions for those with Ur-q experience.
My knowledge of Ur-q's is basic at best, I know only what I've read about
here, and on many suggested websites. My knowledge of automobiles is
pretty basic too. However, I do have my father to draw off of. He is a very
experienced Mechanic (by hobby), we come from a VW/Audi family (preferred
cars) and he has plenty of knowledge with working on audi's.
I don't know the year or km's of/on the vehicle...although it is in N.A. so
that narrows down the year!
I am not looking for a super Hp vehicle, but I don't want a slug (like my
former 84 VW rabbit!). In terms of speed and pickup I would be happy with
something in the ballpark of my mom's '89 90q. I can live with it being a
slug off the line!
Having said that, what engines are compatible with the Ur-q? Can one take
something out of a 4k or 5k? If so what years and what engines will fit? A
ballbark on how much modification it will take?
I have an opportunity to look at the car in about 3 weeks. What sort of
things should I be looking out for? Assuming the drivetrain and interior
are in decent shape, and the exterior is mint what should I be expecting to
offer for this vehicle (without engine)? Just specify what currency you
value it in.
As I still don't have enough $ for it (quite likely) I'm going to be just
checking it out and deciding whether this is something I should go for.
Can a ur-q be a realistic daily driver on a student budget?
Would I be better off trying to purchase/lease the '89 90q from my Mom, or
buying the ur-q? Obviously the Ur-q has a little bit more in the
great-to-own department, but the 90q isn't far off! The 90q has 203,000km
on it right now (or last I saw it at Christmas)
Thanks to those who read this far, and thanks even more to those who answer
my questions!

P.S. Sorry I'm so vague about the location...but the car right now isn't up
for sale (publically that I know of) and I am interested. I intend to find
out what he is doing with the car (has sat untouched for 3 years) and see
if he would want to get rid of it...if my interest wains, though, and he's
open to selling I'll be happy to get a phone number for the list.
