16v to Audi 80 (4k)
The 16v is not going to be as easy as it sounds. I too would recommend a 2.0
liter 8v, perhaps with a ported & polished head, new valvetrain, port matched
manifolds and performance cam. A dual outlet exhaust and dual downpipe too,
if you don't already have that. Some of these cars came with a single outlet
exhaust & downpipe, not a good thing.
I just had all of the above done to my 1.8 liter 4k. I didn't switch to the
2.0 liter because I only have 105,000 miles on my car. What a difference
though... Nice improvements, and still very driveable. 0-60mph times are in
the high 7's.
The head job cost me $1,000 which included the cam, valvetrain, and ported
intake manifold. The exhaust manifold (junkyard) and downpipe (Techtonics)
cost aprox. $250. This you may not even need if you already have a dual
outlet exhaust. And, a completely new 2.0 does not cost any more than $1200 -
$1300 from my source.
I guess it depends on how much you want to spend... The 16v swap may be
cheaper parts-wise, but I think the labor may be a bit more. You can
certainly make an 8 valve close in performance but as you probably know the
16v has more potential.
Good luck,
Briand
