I understand that it was developed to drive water pumps for firefighting. Its designers 
anticipated that in that application, it would be fired up from cold and immediately 
taken up to 5000 rpm, so it was designed with looser clearances than most car engines. 
Those loose clearances were why the Lotus Elan was famous for burning oil, even when 
fairly new.
