If temperature conditions are right (above freezing i.e. 32 degrees) the
air-conditioner compressor will run when the climate control system is placed
in Defrost.

I have had a problem with my 2 Audis with the connector that attaches to
the sensor on the engine. Depending on the model and year the electrical
connector is housed in a plastic connector which is susceptable over time to
heat fatigue. The combination of corrosion and loose connections on the
connector causes intermittent temp sending problems. Check the quality of your
connector at the engine block. (I believe on the 5000TQ) this connector is
attached to the bottom of the radiator hose termination found between the
first and second spark plugs on the engine block.
Good Luck.
