If price, performance (acceleration) and a manual transmission are not a
consideration, then go with the A6 because of the substantially larger
interior and third seat (should you be transporting little Snells and
their friends). I had five Volvo wagons before I bought my first
quattro (predecessor to the current A6) in '92. Put 206,000 miles on it
before trading for a 98.5 A4 Avant. There simply is no comparison
between the Volvo and Audi, but the differences can be more subtle than
immediately apparent. I have driven a Volvo XC only once, and it seemed
most competent. But it did not have the bulletproof feeling of a
quattro. I elected to buy an A4 Avant this time around because price,
performance and a 5-speed were considerations, while space was not. One
additional factor: Having had so many Volvos, you should have a good
idea of the competence of your area Volvo dealer(s). Put some effort
into checking out your area Audi dealer(s). Audi has a terrific
warranty but a so-so dealer network. I have nothing but praise for my
dealer (who happens to be 2,800 or so miles from you), but have read and
heard of countless horror stories. If the dealer that would be
servicing your new A6 Avant quattro for the next several years doesn't
check out satisfactorily, that could be a major concern in the event you
have problems with your car. Good luck.
