Steve:
Sounds like air in the system, or fading due to sustained severe braking
(racing ?) 
Suggest you do a couple of things in increasing financial impact order:

1.-Using  DOT4 brake fluid, replace brake fluid and BLEED the whole
system in the right order.
2.- Test your brake pressure accumulator (bomb) I assume you have not
had any brake light comming on in your "check system".
3.- With engine running maintain brake pedal pressure for about 1 minute
(no pumping), if pedal slowly gives, and you do not see any wheel leaks,
your master cylinder could be on it's way out
