After-run relay failure

That "big flat black component " in the relay IS the transistor. Go to
Radio Shack.
I used, as suggested on the list, their NPN transistor(TIF-31), soldered
it in place. It works.Use a low voltage soldering iron and a quick light
touch. Your problem is exactly what happens. Pump goes, transistor
fries, fan goes to default (15 minutes) dead battery comes next.
