This happened to me with my '90 Golf, which was (and is) my primary
transportation. The repair estimate was about $400 more than the
insurance company valued the car at. Since it ran great, and was my main
vehicle, I valued it much higher! The insurance company paid me off for
the car, and I was able to get the body shop to repair it with after
market parts that were cheaper than the OEM parts the insurance company
wrote for in their estimate. I ended up with a fixed car and $300 in my
pocket! My title now says "salvage" on it, but I don't care. Probably
keep the Golf till it drops.
