ur-quattro differences (continued), Part II...

With regard to my concession that the 20v cars might have a different
suspension geometry than the 10v cars, last night I received confirmation from
a reliable source (i.e., one with the parts actually in his hand) that the
cast SS control arm and three-hole balljoint combo is dimensionally identical
to the earlier parts ... the only difference is that the balljoint is slightly
larger. He also pointed out the 20v rear strut assemblies are dimensionally
identical to the 10v strut assemblies but were slightly redesigned to use the
same type of balljoint setup as on the late 4kq and 80q cars.

So, this, combined with the measurements that Dave posted yesterday, appears
to confirm that Audi did NOT make any geometrical changes to the Ur-Q in order
to accomodate the change from 6x15 wheels to 8x15 wheels ... unfortunately, I
can't say at this point which of the two wheel/tire setups the suspension was
designed around -- there is some evidence to suggest that the "compromised"
setup might in fact be the 6x15 wheels with 205/60-15 tires -- and the only
solution is to model both setups on the computer and see which one of them
appears to work best.

Since my Ur-Q is in the garage at the moment and having the head off it gives
me better access to the pickup points, I'm going to take a few measurements
over the next few weeks and do just that ... I expect the results will be
interesting, to say the least. :^)
