When I was in my teens (mid-70's) there was a place in Palo Alto, CA. called
The Brierpatch. This was a cooperative garage where you rented your chunk of
space on a monthly basis. Times have changed and I doubt such a place would be
possible today.

I suppose gathering regionally as has been discussed some comes close. Now
then, anyone in the Bay Area, CA. have some space and a lift??? ;-)
