... well it could have something to do with some cost the dealer has to pay
relating California emissions since you are registering it in California.
As my little brother found out it is not legal to bring a new car into this
state unless it meets California emissions requirements ... so it is likely
to be true that the car in Reno does indeed meet CA req'ts, but they may
have to pay an extra fee to register the car with the state of California
...

... I don't know for sure, but it is the only thing I can think of other
than what you presume it is ... :-)  Consider yourself lucky, most people
who bring a car in from out of state have to pay the $300 smog impact tax in
any event ...

... I know that Reno is closer than Southern California, but did you try
shopping around at any dealers there?  I understand that competition is
pretty fierce there and it is possible to get some very good deals.  It
would also eliminate any concerns with bringing a car in from out of state
...
