Quick Quattro Qrash Qourse

Quattromeisters,

I'm about to go look at a 1984 4000 quattro, and I need some constructive
advise in a hurry! 

1.  Is this a good year for this make?
2.  How exactly do I use that dif. lock/unlock switch?
3.  What is the reliability of the quattro system in these early cars?
4.  How much would I be expected to pay for one of these in pretty good
condition?

I've owned two Coupe's in my day, an `82 and an `86, so I know the basic
stuff to look out for.  I would check the archives, but my internet
account is on the fritz.  I also wasn't paying attention to the thread
earlier last week because I was hot on the trail of another CGT, which
fell through.  So any help would be much appreciated!  TIA
