geez, I always thought an Audi front end should be dead quiet and
competely tight when it's in perfect condition. A clunk of any kind
means something is loose somewhere.
the last year has been a process of "diminishing" the clunk on my car.
haven't heard it all since replacing the rack, but it's only been a few
days and it had gotten quieter and a bit rarer.
similar to your description, though, at the end of a steered firm stop
or right at a steered take off.

When one of our two 4kcsq's started making a "klunk" as the wheel
straightened after turning, it wasn't long before one of the tie rod ends
broke.
