Update: 4KQ, Suspesion Vibration & Clunk

Guys,

Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like the problem is
in the steeing and suspension. Correcting it sounds
pricey, as in up to 20% of the value of my "$3000
deductable." I'll price out the parts with a couple of
mail order houses. I avoid the local dealer at all costs.
All they have is overpriced parts, longer wait for orders
and cynical old farts at the parts counter. "Oh, broken
power antenna aye, you'll have to replace the hole unit
for $200+." No, I don't think so! I mail ordered the
Audi/Fuba repair kit listed in the Benley Manual for $35.
OK, I'll get off my soap box now.

The parts in question:
Rack - sorry for me there is no spring tension adjustment
on the pinion for the '85-'87 4000.
                     (Good advice though Dave.)
Power steering Pump - I forgot to say it has a noisy bearing
Tie-rods - cheaper to replace as a unit or just the ends?
Control arm bushings - Anybody know a supplier of a
pressing tool? The diameter? I'll make it.
  Ball joints - No brainer
Strut bearings - Only 30K on them, but I'll check the top nuts.
Cartridge housing caps - I'll check them too, they were installed
with special tool # 666, big ass Channel-Locks.
                   (good advice Peter)
Wheel bearings - Most dredded job. There is a tool kit to
replace them with out pulling the struts. Anybody
know where I can get one?

If the price is too much it may be time to upgrade to a newer 90Q,
Coupe Q, or A4Q. If I own an Audi it has to be a Q. When are we
going to see the 1.8T A3Q stateside? Between it an the new 1.8T
Bettle, GTI sales will hit rock bottom.

Anyway enough rambling. I'll keep the List updated,

Danka und gute Nacht!
Damon
